Castor bean seed oil. Causes a sharp laxative effect. In the alkaline environment of the duodenum in the presence of bile, under the influence of lipase, ricinoleic acid is formed from the oil, which irritates receptors throughout the intestine, disrupts the transport of electrolytes and retains water. The remaining oil makes it easier for stool to move through the colon. The laxative effect occurs within 2-6 hours.
