It is essential for blood clotting, collagen and procollagen synthesis, and the regeneration of connective and bone tissue. It improves capillary permeability. It aids iron absorption in the intestines and participates in hemoglobin synthesis. It increases the body's nonspecific resistance and has antidote properties. A deficiency of vitamin C in the diet leads to the development of hypo- and avitaminosis C, as this vitamin is not synthesized in the body.
